They’ve Taken Emotional Intelligence Too Far

They’ve Taken Emotional Intelligence Too Far
The author of Emotional Intelligence explains how this popular concept has been overused
By Daniel Goleman

Have you heard? They say that your EQ counts more than IQ for success. In fact, they say, EQ accounts for 80% of success. As the person who wrote Emotional Intelligence, the book that put the concept on the map, I can tell you that they are dead wrong.

(MORE: The 25 Most Influential Business Management Books)

This and other myths about emotional intelligence constantly float around the blogosphere and get spouted by management consultants. The misinterpretation started nearly the moment TIME put the question, “What’s Your EQ?” on its cover when my book Emotional Intelligence was published in 1995. And by now we are long past the time when it should be put to rest for good.

Here are the facts. There’s no question IQ is by far the better determinant of career success, in the sense of predicting what kind of job you will be able to hold. It typically takes an IQ about 115 or above to be able to handle the cognitive complexity facing an accountant, a physician or a top executive. But here’s the paradox: once you’re in a high-IQ position, intellect loses its power to determine who will emerge as a productive employee or an effective leader. For that, how you handle yourself and your relationships — in other words, the emotional intelligence skill set — matters more than your IQ. In a high-IQ job pool, soft skills like discipline, drive and empathy mark those who emerge as outstanding.

(MORE: The IQ Gene?)

Companies know this. Corporate surveys find that more than two-thirds of major businesses apply some aspect of emotional intelligence in their recruiting, in promotions, and particularly in leadership development. But that emphasis has created a mini-boom in emotional intelligence consultants who too often ignore what the data tells us to make unfounded claims that will sell their services.

One of these fanciful claims is the often-repeated mantra that such personal skills “account for 80%” of business success. This particular myth may stem from a misreading of the studies I’ve written about in my books that look at how much of career success is accounted for by a person’s IQ alone. Most researchers conclude that IQ accounts for between 10 to 20 percent. That, as I’ve pointed out, leaves room for a wide range of other factors — everything from the family or social status you’re born into, to luck, to emotional intelligence, to name but a few. But people seem to jump to the conclusion that EQ alone makes up that 80% gap — and it does not.

The wish to believe EQ offers a magical alternative to IQ no doubt has multiple drivers. For some, it may be a consolation for poor school grades; for others a code for humanizing the workplace. Still others see EQ as an argument for more women in leadership. All those reasons may, one day, find hard data to support them — but we are not there yet. To be sure, we are seeing a slow aggregation of data supporting the added value of EQ, particularly for leaders, but these are typically small studies. The slow march of research lags far behind the hype of EQ marketers.
Goleman is a psychologist and author of 12 books including Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence. The views expressed are solely his own.

Law of Patience, with business

Patience is not a skill that comes naturally. At least not to me. I’m just as aggressive as the next person when it comes to wanting to see the impact from my ideas. What I have plenty of is impatience. I want to see the results now, not years down the line. The reality is that innovation takes time.

One example of getting it right is the story of David Packard and HP’s decision to jump into the computer market. At the time, the industry was dominated by IBM, DEC and others. HP managers made their case that HP should enter the market based on the companies expertise and capabilities. David wasn’t convinced but made the decision to follow the expertise, commitment and passion of his executives. When the decision was made, David made it clear to everyone inside HP, that this was a total commitment on the part of the company. The timeline he set out? To be the #1 computer manufacturer in the world in 25 years. How long did it take? HP became the #1 computer manufacturer in 23 years. That’s what I call “sticking with it“.

At the same time, some innovations do need to be killed. They should be killed when all other options for success have been exhausted and its obvious that they aren’t going to deliver.

Be careful not to be too quick to pull the trigger and kill an idea. Anyone can use short term metrics to rationalize a decision not to go forward. The safe answer is “no” as it eliminates the risk while the risky answer is “yes”, when the path to success is not guaranteed. There are no guarantees in life. I’m sure Bill and Dave questioned the decision to go into computers, but they had patience and stuck with it.

How should you instill patience into your innovation programs?

1. Be realistic about how long this is going to take and set an appropriate time horizon. If it will take decades, then set the timeline accordingly.
2. Define regular checkpoints/gates with clear objectives for each gate. Do not make these gates correspond to budget or planning cycles.
3. Do NOT use the gates to rationalize killing the project, but instead, use the gates as a prompt for management to know where to commit time and resources to ensure the project is successful.
4. Only after you’ve exhausted all options over multiple gates, do you consider killing the project. Even then, make sure you aren’t killing it for the wrong reasons (e.g. getting nervous, wall street pressure, etc)

The point is, when you start down the path of creating breakthrough innovations, realize that you are making one of the most significant commitments for the organization. Once you commit, then really commit. Don’t throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

How important is the law of patience to your organization?

Tips for Reaching Out to Twitter's 50 Million Daily Users

Tips for Reaching Out to Twitter's 50 Million Daily Users
by Angela West
19.10.2011 kl 22:22 | PC World (US)

Web designers, advertising agencies, and people with a firm grip on the online world have known for years that Twitter is indispensable. The trick has always been how to communicate that to the business owners who were their clients.

Web designers, advertising agencies, and people with a firm grip on the online world have known for years that Twitter is indispensable. The trick has always been how to communicate that to the business owners who were their clients.

Flash to today. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo revealed at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco that Twitter is valued at $8 billion and boasts over 100 million users, 50 million of whom log in daily. Those users send 250 million tweets a day. In addition, Facebook is letting users update their Twitter accounts from Facebook, which will encourage even more use .

The number of daily users and tweets being sent per day represent missed business opportunities if you're not using Twitter well. Luckily, getting on Twitter is simple. For your business, you might want to take the extra step of having a graphic designer create a properly branded Twitter background for your profile. Also create a decent photo or logo to use as your Twitter avatar, the picture that appears to the left of your tweets and at the top of your page.

Find Followers Who Are Potential Clients

If you're a real estate agent, adding people interested in properties is likely to net you a following of other agents, not people interested in purchasing homes in your area. Go where your customers are. Search for users in your area who have interests similar to those in your usual demographic. If you sell condos, add a few followers a day who look like young urban professionals. If you sell homes, look for local mom bloggers and add them. This method takes a little more time, but it's much more likely to net relevant followers.

Use Twitter Properly as a Business

Many companies get on Twitter and tweet boring stuff like corporate donations, company news, and their latest press release. While there is room on Twitter for these announcements, if they're all your company pumps out, potential clients will largely ignore your Twitter account.

Remember that Twitter is, at its core, a two-way channel to communicate your and brand to the world. It's not a one-way advertising channel. You need to make sure that you're interacting with your followers rather than just throwing links out to the world. Give a couple of people in your organization the job of managing the Twitter account, and make sure to pass along and follow up on inquiries and service requests.

Take a look at your core demographic. If they're seniors, they'll appreciate links to helpful articles about programs to fight identity theft or other scams. If they're younger adults, they'll more likely to click on links to cool YouTube videos.

Schedule Tweets to Save Time

With HootSuite, multiple users can log into a Twitter account and manage it from anywhere. You can schedule tweets, which means you can take a few minutes in the morning to line up tweets throughout the day. You can also set Twitter up to email you when someone mentions you on Twitter or asks you a question, which lets your company jump on the request right away without constantly monitoring the service.

If you were off the Twitter bandwagon until now, have a look at the numbers and examine if you can devote a small amount of resources to start up your account and maintain a Twitter account.

To be successful, there are many skills a manager needs to master. I adapted Kammy Hatnes' pyramid structure to show the increasingly difficult management skills you must master at each level and to also display how these management skills build on each other to help you achieve success in your management career. The result is the Management Skills Pyramid shown here. Each level of the Management Skills Pyramid is listed below and is discussed in more detail on the linked pages.

The Management Skills Pyramid, Level 1
Level 1 of the Management Skills Pyramid shows the basic skills a manager must master just to get the job done. These are the fundamentals of the management job:

Plan
Organize
Direct
Control
The Management Skills Pyramid, Level 2
After you have mastered the basic skills in level 1, you need to move on and develop your skills onLevel 2 of the Management Skills Pyramid.

These are the management skills that you use to develop your staff. There are many specific skills required, and these are discussed in Level 2 of the Management Skills Pyramid, but they are grouped into these categories:

Motivation
Training and Coaching
Employee Involvement
The Management Skills Pyramid, Level 3
When you have become skilled in developing your staff, it's time to focus on Level 3 of the Management Skills Pyramid, improving your own development. These management skills are grouped as:

Self Management and
Time Management
Time management gets its own category because it is so important to your success in all the other skills.

The Management Skills Pyramid, Top Level
The peak of the Management Skills Pyramid, the single skill that will help you the most in developing success in your management career, is leadership.

Personal Power at your Fingertips

Personal Power at your Fingertips
Release Emotions With EFT
From Joachim Schubert / Gwenn Bonnell

Stress. Anxiety. Guilt. Pain. Sadness. Trauma. These feelings and emotions are all part of our human existence. At times, however, one or more of these can become negative emotions and can block our ability to live life fully. We may find ourselves repeating patterns in relationships, with career choices, or with physical ailments, feeling stuck in situations that appear to be beyond our control.

We now have a simple but powerful tool that can help us regain our sense of choice over our negative emotions and recover our personal power. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT for short) allows easy release of negative emotions and turns the stuck energy into empowerment so we can freely choose what is best in our lives. After the release of the negative emotions we can be free to experience more of life's joy and happiness.
What is EFT?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is an easy yet effective method developed by Gary Craig that allows quick release of negative emotions. EFT involves tapping on certain meridian points that communicate energetic information throughout the human body while focused on the emotion we want to release.
Try EFT Now!
Take a few minutes to learn the fundamental steps of this powerful self-help tool.

Recall an experience when something happened that you felt was out of your control. What are your feelings as you think about that situation or the people involved? Name the feeling or emotional response that you have right now. If you cannot name the specific feeling, just call it "This emotion." Rate the intensity of the emotional response on a scale from zero to ten, with ten being the most intense and zero being no emotional response at all.

Perform The Setup: With the finger pads of the index and middle fingers of your dominant hand, begin tapping lightly the "Karate Chop" point of your other hand. The fleshy part on the side of the hand below the little finger is known as the Karate Chop point. While continuously tapping this point, repeat the following Setup Statement three times: "Even though I have this emotion, I deeply and completely accept myself." If you can name the emotion, then replace the word "emotion" with the specific feeling such as "anger," "guilt," or "sadness."

Physical pain or discomfort can also be treated with EFT. Simply replace the word "emotion" with a description of the problem such as "headache," " lower back pain," or "arthritis in my knee." For example, to treat my stress I repeat, "Even though I have this stress, I deeply and completely accept myself," three times while continuously tapping the Karate Chop point.

Next, perform the Tapping Sequence by tapping about five times on each point (see point chart) to rebalance your energy flow. Keep focused on the emotion or problem by repeating a Reminder Phrase similar to the Setup Statement. To release stress, I repeat, "This stress" while tapping lightly about five times on each of the following points:

EB = Beginning of the Eye Brow
SE = Side of the Eye
UE = Under the Eye
UN = Under the Nose
CH = The Chin
CB = Beginning of the Collar Bone
UA = Under the Arm
KC = Karate Chop Point

Points on either side of the body can be used, and sides can be switched during the tapping sequence.

Take a deep breath. Now focus on the emotion you were addressing. Rate the intensity of that feeling on the 0-10 scale. If you were feeling stress on a level of 5 or 6, is it still at that same level?
Complete Relief
If the feeling you had is completely relieved, and you feel no emotional response at all when you recall the experience from Step #1, great! You responded well to one round of EFT! You experienced, in a few moments, the power of this technique.

Partial Relief
Often, however, there is a reduction in the level of intensity of the emotion, say from a 5 or 6 to a 2 or 3. The remainder of the emotion needs to be treated with another round or two of EFT. In the subsequent rounds, it is important to adjust the Setup Statement and the Reminder Phrase to address the rest of the emotion or feeling. Use wording similar to, "Even though I still have some of this emotion, I deeply and completely accept myself," and repeat it three times while tapping the Karate Chop point. Then repeat, "This remaining stress," or "This remaining problem" during the Tapping Sequence. Do as many rounds of EFT as necessary until your emotional response is zero when you focus on the original experience from Step #1.
No Relief
If the first round of EFT did not lower the intensity of the feeling, try becoming more specific with the Setup Statement. For example, when dealing with stress you may need to define who or what is causing my stress to unblock the stuck energy. You could then repeat something similar to "Even though I have this stress about having to finish this article by today, I deeply and completely accept myself" during the Setup. Then you could use "this deadline stress" as a Reminder Phrase during the Tapping Sequence. Along with being more specific, persistence is sometimes necessary with this technique to reach a breakthrough. Try a few more rounds of EFT and see if the intensity of the problem or emotion eases somewhat.

This simple, or "shortcut," version of EFT is around 60 % effective and often results is some sort of relief for a specific problem. Coached by a skilled practitioner, who will know how to deal with special blocks that sometimes stand in the way of success, EFT has been clinically shown to be 80% effective.
How Will You Use EFT in Your Life?
Now that you have the basics of a powerful tool, try it on any negative or uncomfortable emotion you encounter and to help you gain control over many areas in your life. Try it on everything! EFT has no negative side effects, and the procedure only takes a few minutes to complete. Tap into your personal power with the self-help tool of the new millennium!

Bill Gates - 11 Rules

Love him or hate him , he sure hits the nail on the head with this!

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your
self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault , so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Cancer Survivors and Factors Affecting Employment

Cancer Survivors and Factors Affecting Employment
Article by Dr. Sloan, MD.

Disease Related Factors
Cancer type has the strongest determinant in employment of cancer survivors. Lower employment and work ability are commonly seen in cancer patients of nervous system, lung and hematological (leukemia). The fact that the recurrence rate of the cancer of nervous system is rather high coupled with the unpleasant side effects of the treatment and complications of the cancer, such group of cancer patients are less favored when it comes to employment. As for lung cancer, the survival rate is low with 10% men and 13% women achieve five year survival rate.

Breast, colorectal, prostate and testicular cancers are among the most prevalent and have higher survival rate due to advances in cancer treatment. Thus, the chances of returning to work following diagnosis and treatment within these groups are comparatively higher.

Other existing chronic illness like diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia would also affect the return to work and work ability of the employees.

Chemotherapy being a common treatment modality for cancer usually causes side effects like fatigue, menopause and cognitive impairment as compared to other mode of treatments. Fatigue level independently predicts how soon an employee with cancer is ready to return to work and significantly impact on work ability. Treatment related symptoms significantly decrease the quality of life among patients undergoing treatment. Such side effects should be addressed during follow up in order for the medical team to make necessary adjustments on the treatment.

Sociodemographic Factors
Sociodemographic factors of the employees do play a role in employment and work ability of cancer survivors. Employers are less likely to hire those who are older, working in blue collar jobs and have lower educational backgrounds. It is not uncommon for lower educated employees to work in more physically demanding jobs. Physical capacity of the these cancer survivors may be compromised by the diseases or even the treatment itself. Thus, it is not surprising that cancer survivors with a lower education might be more likely to discontinue their work after a bout with cancer than those with a higher education.

Work-Related Factors
The work ability of the employees resuming a job upon treatment would be improved greatly if there is practical support from their supervisors in the form of taking the illness into consideration when allocating work tasks to the employees at the workplace.

Potential social issues that cancer survivors may encounter upon rejoining the workplace are, fear of discrimination, unwillingness to change work tasks, and unwillingness to change their current jobs for the fear of losing insurance coverage. Such worries and fears have a negative impact on their quality of life and productivity.

The social support from the workplace, occupational physician and the willingness of the employer to accommodate the cancer survivors are the important factors in assisting cancer survivors to return to work.

Impairment of work ability associated with cancer varied in various reports from about 20% to 30%. It is crucial to identify those cancer survivors who are at the highest risk of impaired work ability and would most likely discontinue their working life earlier. Once this group of employees are identified, a more comprehensive type of return to work program could be designed and serve as a part of management of cancer survivors in returning to work via early assessment and intervention program.
