Patience is not a skill that comes naturally. At least not to me. I’m just as aggressive as the next person when it comes to wanting to see the impact from my ideas. What I have plenty of is impatience. I want to see the results now, not years down the line. The reality is that innovation takes time.
One example of getting it right is the story of David Packard and HP’s decision to jump into the computer market. At the time, the industry was dominated by IBM, DEC and others. HP managers made their case that HP should enter the market based on the companies expertise and capabilities. David wasn’t convinced but made the decision to follow the expertise, commitment and passion of his executives. When the decision was made, David made it clear to everyone inside HP, that this was a total commitment on the part of the company. The timeline he set out? To be the #1 computer manufacturer in the world in 25 years. How long did it take? HP became the #1 computer manufacturer in 23 years. That’s what I call “sticking with it“.
At the same time, some innovations do need to be killed. They should be killed when all other options for success have been exhausted and its obvious that they aren’t going to deliver.
Be careful not to be too quick to pull the trigger and kill an idea. Anyone can use short term metrics to rationalize a decision not to go forward. The safe answer is “no” as it eliminates the risk while the risky answer is “yes”, when the path to success is not guaranteed. There are no guarantees in life. I’m sure Bill and Dave questioned the decision to go into computers, but they had patience and stuck with it.
How should you instill patience into your innovation programs?
1. Be realistic about how long this is going to take and set an appropriate time horizon. If it will take decades, then set the timeline accordingly.
2. Define regular checkpoints/gates with clear objectives for each gate. Do not make these gates correspond to budget or planning cycles.
3. Do NOT use the gates to rationalize killing the project, but instead, use the gates as a prompt for management to know where to commit time and resources to ensure the project is successful.
4. Only after you’ve exhausted all options over multiple gates, do you consider killing the project. Even then, make sure you aren’t killing it for the wrong reasons (e.g. getting nervous, wall street pressure, etc)
The point is, when you start down the path of creating breakthrough innovations, realize that you are making one of the most significant commitments for the organization. Once you commit, then really commit. Don’t throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

Computerworld - At Intel Corp., just passing its 40th anniversary and with myriad chips in its historical roster, a top company exec looks 40 years into the future to a time when human intelligence and machine intelligence have begun to merge.
Justin Rattner, CTO and a senior fellow at Intel, told Computerworld that perhaps as early as 2012 we'll see the lines between human and machine intelligence begin to blur. Nanoscale chips or machines will move through our bodies, fixing deteriorating organs or unclogging arteries. Sensors will float around our internal systems monitoring our blood sugar levels and heart rates, and alerting doctors to potential health problems.
Virtual worlds will become increasingly realistic, while robots will develop enough intelligence and human-like characteristics that they'll become companions, not merely vacuum cleaners and toys.
Most aspects of our lives, in fact, will be very different as we close in on the year 2050. Computing will be less about launching applications and more about living lives in which computers are inextricably woven into our daily activities.
"What we think of as a computer and what we think of as IT, in general, is likely to change," said Rattner, who has been at Intel for 35 of the company's 40 years. "The intelligent systems will move from being information systems to intelligent systems that will carry out a whole variety of tasks that we just won't think of as computing tasks.... The technology will find its way into so many things we do, and we won't even think about it. The explicit way we've done computing in the past will be there, but it will be a very small subset of what we'll be doing."
Intel hit its 40th anniversary last Friday. The company launched its first microprocessor in 1971, developed a processor with more than 1 million transistors in 1989, and late in 2007 packed 820 million transistors onto a single chip.
While chip advancements will continue throughout the semiconductor industry, technology advancements in general will start to change, according to Rattner.
"When you think back on where we were [decades ago] ... computers were still things that largely sat in big rooms behind big windows and were attended to by computing gurus or priests," he added. "In the 40 years, we've just completely changed the way people think about computers and computing. It's gone from a very expensive, very exclusive kind of technology to something that is unquestionably ubiquitous -- from the computers on our desks to the computers in our cell phones."
In the next 40 years, computer chips will extend beyond our computers and phones, as people want to become more entrenched in virtual worlds and computers learn to react to our motions and thoughts.
"When you see how intense the reaction is to things like the iPhone, with its use of touch and its sensitivity to motion, you begin to get a sense of, 'Gee, if machines understand the physical world and were capable of reacting to our voices, to our movements and gestures and touch, how much closer would we feel to them?'" asked Rattner. "At the same time, of course, we would like the ability to become more a part of these artificial or virtual worlds that are created entirely within the machine. We're starting to see, with things like Second Life and now Lively from Google, the ability of these machines to create these worlds that are much more comfortable for us to experience and be a part of."
As machine learning and computer perception progresses, machines will take on more and more human-like characteristics, he added. Recently, scientists have been putting electrodes into living neurons in living brains, but some researchers are working on ways to transfer brain waves and organic information without the electrodes, which wouldn't be physically intrusive.
"You can imagine a future where, in fact, not just our very senses will be engaged, but our thoughts will drive machine behavior," said Rattner. "You can see how that boundary starts to soften and begins to blur.... There's no question in my mind that the technology will bring these two unique and distinct forms of intelligence together."

Fake degrees, but real certificates.
A thriving illegal racket in the subcontinent – specifically India and Pakistan - has now spilt over into the UAE with all sorts of educational qualifications up for sale.
For as little as Dh20,000 one can buy an MBA degree certificate from India while, a graduate degree certificate will cost you only Dh5,000.
A diploma in a computer course is in demand and therefore, sells for Dh8,069.
Getting a job and a decent pay-scale in the UAE often hinges on the degrees one possesses – especially if one is from the subcontinent.
For a sales person, having an MBA could mean a salary increase of as much as Dh5,000.
A degree certificate also ensures better visa status and could be the difference between an expatriate getting a family visa or not.
Which is why, the UAE is a bustling market for these fake degrees.
What makes them so unique is that the certificates are actually issued by a real university. This is why attestation is also possible.
However, the buyer just pays up and has never attended the university or an exam.
The Vice-Chancellor of one of India's largest universities - in terms of student enrolment –confirmed to Emirates 24|7 that the scam exists, he is aware of the issue and that the Indian government is taking measures to curtail the practice.
“There are many cases involving various universities. We are aware of the problem and strict measures are being put in place,” Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice- Chancellor of India's Indira Gandhi National Open University said.
A salesman working in the hospitality industry here in the UAE told Emirates 24|7 how he has paid an Indian agent Dh10,000 for an MBA.
“They will ensure your name is on the college rolls you get your certificate. Sometimes the use distance education programmes, so it’s almost impossible to detect,” he says.
Tariq S (name changed), who until recently worked in a furniture store in Dubai says he managed to get a BBA degree in a similar way.
“I tried doing it on my own. I could not dedicate time to study nor write thee exams. Finally I paid up this agent in India and managed to get my degree,” he said.
According to him it is all carefully managed. “You are only accepted by an agent, provided you are referred by one of his earlier customers,” says Tariq.
Cops on the hunt
In June 2010 police in Bangalore, India, busted a major fake degree certificate racket.
Police later said the men used to sell fake degree certificates, mark sheets, and transfer certificates of various universities to students who had otherwise failed in their examinations.
Some of the beneficiaries were employed with multi- national companies, police claimed.
Also in 2010, two men were arrested by the police in Kerala, India, for supplying forged certificates to passport applicants. Police found and seized fake degree certificates of Kerala University and voter IDs.
Police said the fake certificates were being used to help the applicants get jobs abroad.
The Mumbai State Education Department on January 3, 2011, found at least five teachers used fake bachelor of education (BEd) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree certificates to secure jobs in schools.
Pakistan affected too
Pakistan too has launched a major investigation into alleged fake degrees submitted by several of its members of parliament.
According to a report by The News International, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) last week expressed doubts over the eligibility of as many as 298 legislators, including Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Federal Law Minister Dr Babar Awan, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
The ECP doubted the lawmakers’ eligibility as they had failed to provide copies of their metric and intermediate certificates despite reminders, which impedes the process of verification of graduation degrees and educational certificates, as directed by the Supreme Court.
Destination UK
According to a report published by the UK's Daily Express last week, a large number of fake degree holders enter the UK every year to work as illegal workers.
The report, quoting MigrationWatch, says that almost 32,000 of the more than 250,000 foreign students arriving in the UK every year are bogus students as there are no interviews before a visa is issued and no checks are made on their departure.
“While student applications to the UK from Nepal increased by more than 1,000 per cent, those from Bangladesh increase by over 300 per cent, while those from India were up by 88 per cent. Since March 2009, 56 educational establishments have had their licences revoked for helping students breach visa laws,” the report added.
Possible answer
The Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) said the issuance of fake degree certificates and forgery of mark sheets could soon come to an end with the finalisation of proposals for dematerialising such certificates.
The ministry is considering request for proposals (RFPs) from two depositories – National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) – for running the project thereby establishing a national database of academic qualifications (degree/certificates from school to graduate/postgraduate level including professional degrees), that would be created and maintained in an electronic format by a registered depository.
All mark sheets and certificates will be dematerialised a data base will be maintained by the respective depositories.

All mark sheets and certificates will be dematerialised a data base will be maintained by the respective depositories.

One of the most famous faces in Hong Kong, the billionaire, Francis Choi, who is world renowned for his company, Early Light International, that is said to be the largest manufacturer of toys in the world has now turned his passion for watches into a new business model. Mr. Choi, who himself has a collection of over 200 exquisite luxury watches, some of them being the world’s most expensive watches, last year acquired watch retail chain, Halewinner. As of now Halewinner has more about eight retail stores and Francis Choi is planning to expand the retail chain.
Ironically, Halewinner, the company now owned by Francis Choi, is the one that sold the billionaire his very first expensive watch. With his due share of hardships in building a multimillion dollar empire, Mr. Choi purchased his first watch with money he found lying on a beach. Halewinner was founded in the year 1988 and since has offered its customers with some of the most luxurious watch brands in the world including Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Cartier, Omega and Vacheron Constantin. Francis Choi, whose net worth is estimated to be around $2.1 billion for the year 2011, has a number of assets in his name including Kowloon City Plaza, car parks, offices and residences and serves as the vice chairman of the Regal Hotel in Hong Kong.

On my desk I have a dictionary and a thesaurus. Our offices at GAI (www.gunwel.com) are a big open space where we all sit facing each other and often times I’ll say “someone give me a word for…” (as I’m too lazy to open the thesaurus) and instead of someone just giving me a word or phrase you hear …tap, tap, tap of the keys as they google for a word or phrase. The internet is changing our brains. Neurologists and psychologists have discovered that our brains process Internet pages differently than they do printed pages. That can affect how much we learn when we read – and even alter our brains themselves.
The human brain “rewires” itself depending on how it is used, an ability neurologists refer to as “plasticity.” Apparently spending one hour per day on the internet for just one week alters our neural pathways. The neural rewiring could have unfortunate consequences. For the past five centuries, reading books has helped train human brains to concentrate intently over extended periods of time, an ability that has helped our species produces ideas and inventions. If we abandon books in favor of the Internet, our ability to maintain focus and think up new ideas might diminish. Here are other consequences of Internet use and what we can do about them…
Interruption System: When we read online, words are not the only information coming at us. There usually eye-catching advertisements alongside the text and hyperlinks in the text in case we wish to jump to different Web pages on related topics. We might have our e-mail program open and a Facebook feed, too, alerting us each time a new message arrives. Even when a printed book is transferred to an electronic device connected to the Internet, it turns into something very much like a Web site, with links and other digital enhancements. These distractions don’t just slow our reading, they also make it less likely that we will understand and retain new knowledge. What to do: When you wish to give your full attention to online or eReader text, close your e-mail program, your Facebook page and other competing information feeds on the screen. Also, use software settings that minimize interruptions.
Less is read: The Internet puts more information than ever at our fingertips – yet evidence suggests that it actually leads us to read and rely upon a smaller set of information resources, encouraging uncreative group thinking. The trouble is that the Internet does not just provide information. It also subtly evaluates it for us. Search engines typically sort their results in order of popularity, and few if us scan past the first page of results. What to do: So scan beyond the first page of results when you use a search engine to explore a topic of interest. This at least gives you a chance to learn more than what almost everyone else interested in the topic already knows. When an Internet search for a piece of information leads you to a compelling article, book or Web site, jot down its name, then explore it more fully when you have more time.
Less Social Intelligence: The Internet is no longer confined to our desktops. E-readers, smartphones and even vehicle dashboards increasingly allow us to bring the online world wherever we go – a trend that will accelerate in the years ahead. The danger of digital distractions while driving already is well publicized. Less discussed is the potential danger that such portable distractions pose while we’re just sitting around with friends or loved ones. The distractions created by the use of mobile Internet devices make it less likely that we will fully grasp the psychological states of other people’s moods, the less able we are to show appropriate empathy, weakening the bonds that hold together human communities, families and friendships. What to do: Turn off digital devices when you spend time with others…nuff said.

Floyd Norris has a good piece about how overconfidence in the ability to deal with risks led to both the financial crisis and the crisis with Japan's nuclear power plant. The piece makes the essential point that seems to have escaped great economic thinkers here, that there is no way Japan can default on its debt.
Even though Japan's debt is more than twice its GDP (about three times the size of the U.S. debt), there is no risk of default since its debt is in its own currency. In this way Japan is like the United States and the United Kingdom, and unlike Greece and Ireland.
In the worst case scenario, Japan or the United States would print lots of money and see inflation. Given that Japan has been flirting with deflation for almost two decades this doesn't seem like a plausible scenario, but in any case it is not the story of Greece being held at the mercy of the bond vigilantes who will not buy its debt.
The people who hold up Greece's crisis as a possible scenario for Japan and the United States deserve our contempt if they are deliberately misleading their audience or our empathy if their mistake lacks from their problems with understanding basic economics. However their arguments do not deserve serious consideration by people involved in policy debates.

How to Feng Shui Your Cubicle

Cleaning crews may come in, but aside from an empty wastebasket, it's usually hard to tell. Bring in your own cloths and cleaning solution--not only for this feng shui project, but also to use on a regular basis to get at the dirt most cleaning crews always seem to miss. Try a natural combination of water, vinegar and tea tree oil.

Start clearing and cleaning your cubicle from top to bottom. Empty cabinets and drawers of their contents to clean inside. Clear your desk of everything and wipe it down--keyboard, mouse and monitor included. Just pile everything onto the floor and under your desk until your storage spaces are clean.

Avoid the habitual inclination to put everything back where it was. Put some thought into where each item can best be utilized with the least effort on your part.

If there's anything in your cubicle that you do not need--old files left by the last employee, a hole punch that you never use, a pen holder that you hate--get rid of it. If it's not something you can simply return to the supply closet, ask your office manager or supervisor what should be done with it.

Dig into those files that have been building and bulging for months, maybe even years. Get rid of what you can and straighten the rest.

If possible, move your computer so that your back is not to the door, which is bad feng shui. Not only does it force you to work under the constant anticipation of someone surprising you from behind, but you're blocking good ch'i, the very energy that feng shui is intended to help you attract. If the logistics of your cubicle do not allow for you to face the door, hang a mirror on your cubicle wall beside your monitor, positioned in such a way that you can see when people come to your door. This mirror will also attract good ch'i into your cube.

If you do not already have a live plant in your cubicle, bring one from home. It will help circulate nourishing ch'i throughout the space. If possible, bring a couple of them and place them on either side of your door to attract good ch'i into your cube.

Work is a great place to enhance the wealth area of your life. To enhance the wealth area in your cubicle, place something purple in the far-left corner from the door.

Hang some pictures of landscapes on your cubicle walls. It not only creates the illusion of windows, through which ch'i flows, but also creates for you the kind of peaceful environment you need to feel at ease, which is the ultimate intention of feng shui. Bodies of water are especially helpful, as water is associated with the career area of your life. Hang this picture on the wall that your door is on, as this is the career area of your space.
Tips & Warnings
It's tempting to wallpaper cubicles with photographs, cartoons, calendars, clippings and posters. Keep it to a minimum, as it can start to look like one big chaotic mess which, ultimately, you'll start to feel inside.
Afternoon sun coming in from the west can be oppressive. If you're affected by it in your cubicle, and you have a place to do so, hang a crystal ball to turn this negative ch'i into a rainbow of nourishing color

This would include any old poems or pictures pinned to the partition wall, last month's post-it note reminders, the scribbled-on papers and torn envelopes in the desk tray, pens that do not work, old file folders you'll never use, all broken or forgotten knick-knacks, souvenir coffee cups, brochures you'll never look at, magazines from two months back, anything that has a phone number on it but no name, the bagel you'll never eat and the sweater you'll never wear on the stool you'll never sit on.

Create the "power" position. In an office, the perfect feng shui "power" position calls for the worker to be seated at a desk so that he or she faces the door or entrance opening. However, office cubicles are typically are so small that arranging furniture in this position is all but impossible. Sitting with your back to the door can create anxiety and cause the nagging feeling that someone or something may be "sneaking up" on you. If this is the case in your cubical, solve the problem by arranging a mirror somewhere in your space that allows you to view the reflection of the entrance behind you.

Decorate "feng shui" style. Now that you've eliminated the clutter in your cubicle and created your "power" position, add cubicle decorations for positive chi. To encourage positive chi, ensure that each and every decoration in your cubicle has harmonious meaning. Framed pictures of serene landscapes or similar artwork will soothe the soul. According to the nine life areas of the Feng Shui Ba-gua octagon, your Career Area is presented by where you sit at your desk or in your cubicle. From this starting point, your Wealth Area would be the far left corner of the top of your desk or workspace. Enhance your Wealth Area by adding even the smallest piece of ribbon or paper in the colors of purple, blue, green, or gold. If you have a beloved object or knick-knack that represents wealth to you, feel free to add it to this very important area.

Add green plants and soothing water. If you possibly can, add nine small green plants to your cubicle space. Situate plants so that they sprinkle positive chi throughout your workspace. The color of green is, of course, representative of wealth and will attract abundance and creativity into your cubicle. A soothing water fountain creates active, positive chi and encourages only abundance-building individuals and energy to enter through your cubicle opening.

* Lesson Number One *
A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?"
The crow answered: "Sure, why not."
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
Management Lesson: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
* Lesson Number Two *
A turkey was chatting with a bull.
"I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.
Management Lesson: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.
* Lesson Number Three *
When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss. The brain said, "I should be Boss because I control the whole body's responses and functions."
The feet said, "We should be Boss as we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go." The hands said, "We should be the Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money." And so it went on and on with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until finally the asshole spoke up.
All the parts laughed at the idea of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole went on strike, blocked itself up and refused to work. Within a short time the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic and the brain fevered. Eventually they all decided that the asshole should be the Boss, so the motion was passed.
All the other parts did all the work while the Boss just sat and passed out the sh*t!
Management Lesson: You don't need brains to be Boss, any asshole will do!
* Lesson Number Four *
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out!
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard he bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!
Management Lessons Summary:
1. Not everyone who drops sh*t on you is your enemy.
2. Not everyone who gets you out of sh*t is your friend.
3. When you're in deep sh*t, keep your mouth shut!

"I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.
Management Lesson: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.
* Lesson Number Three *
When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss. The brain said, "I should be Boss because I control the whole body's responses and functions."
The feet said, "We should be Boss as we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go." The hands said, "We should be the Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money." And so it went on and on with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until finally the asshole spoke up.
All the parts laughed at the idea of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole went on strike, blocked itself up and refused to work. Within a short time the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic and the brain fevered. Eventually they all decided that the asshole should be the Boss, so the motion was passed.
All the other parts did all the work while the Boss just sat and passed out the sh*t!
Management Lesson: You don't need brains to be Boss, any asshole will do!
* Lesson Number Four *
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out!
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard he bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!
Management Lessons Summary:
1. Not everyone who drops sh*t on you is your enemy.
2. Not everyone who gets you out of sh*t is your friend.
3. When you're in deep sh*t, keep your mouth shut!

Disease Related Factors
Cancer type has the strongest determinant in employment of cancer survivors. Lower employment and work ability are commonly seen in cancer patients of nervous system, lung and hematological (leukemia). The fact that the recurrence rate of the cancer of nervous system is rather high coupled with the unpleasant side effects of the treatment and complications of the cancer, such group of cancer patients are less favored when it comes to employment. As for lung cancer, the survival rate is low with 10% men and 13% women achieve five year survival rate.
Breast, colorectal, prostate and testicular cancers are among the most prevalent and have higher survival rate due to advances in cancer treatment. Thus, the chances of returning to work following diagnosis and treatment within these groups are comparatively higher.
Other existing chronic illness like diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia would also affect the return to work and work ability of the employees.
Chemotherapy being a common treatment modality for cancer usually causes side effects like fatigue, menopause and cognitive impairment as compared to other mode of treatments. Fatigue level independently predicts how soon an employee with cancer is ready to return to work and significantly impact on work ability. Treatment related symptoms significantly decrease the quality of life among patients undergoing treatment. Such side effects should be addressed during follow up in order for the medical team to make necessary adjustments on the treatment.
Sociodemographic Factors
Sociodemographic factors of the employees do play a role in employment and work ability of cancer survivors. Employers are less likely to hire those who are older, working in blue collar jobs and have lower educational backgrounds. It is not uncommon for lower educated employees to work in more physically demanding jobs. Physical capacity of the these cancer survivors may be compromised by the diseases or even the treatment itself. Thus, it is not surprising that cancer survivors with a lower education might be more likely to discontinue their work after a bout with cancer than those with a higher education.
Work-Related Factors
The work ability of the employees resuming a job upon treatment would be improved greatly if there is practical support from their supervisors in the form of taking the illness into consideration when allocating work tasks to the employees at the workplace.
Potential social issues that cancer survivors may encounter upon rejoining the workplace are, fear of discrimination, unwillingness to change work tasks, and unwillingness to change their current jobs for the fear of losing insurance coverage. Such worries and fears have a negative impact on their quality of life and productivity.
The social support from the workplace, occupational physician and the willingness of the employer to accommodate the cancer survivors are the important factors in assisting cancer survivors to return to work.
Impairment of work ability associated with cancer varied in various reports from about 20% to 30%. It is crucial to identify those cancer survivors who are at the highest risk of impaired work ability and would most likely discontinue their working life earlier. Once this group of employees are identified, a more comprehensive type of return to work program could be designed and serve as a part of management of cancer survivors in returning to work via early assessment and intervention program.
