Computer Joke
A language instructor was explaining to her class that French nouns, unlike their English counterparts, are grammatically designated as masculine or feminine. Things like ‘chalk’ or ‘pencil,’ she described, would have a gender association although in English these words were neutral. Puzzled, one student raised his hand and asked, “What gender is a computer?” The teacher wasn’t certain which it was, and so divided the class into two groups and asked them to decide if a computer should be masculine or feminine. One group was comprised of the women in the class, and the other, of men. Both groups were asked to give four reasons for their recommendation.
The group of women concluded that computers should be referred to in the masculine gender because:
  1. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
  2. They have a lot of data but are still clueless.
  3. They are supposed to help you solve your problems, but half the time they ARE the problem.
  4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had waited a little longer, you might have had a better model.
The men, on the other hand, decided that computers should definitely be referred to in the feminine gender because:
  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
  3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

Intel: Human and computer intelligence will merge in 40 years
On the company's anniversary, a future of sensors, robots and new thinking

Computerworld - At Intel Corp., just passing its 40th anniversary and with myriad chips in its historical roster, a top company exec looks 40 years into the future to a time when human intelligence and machine intelligence have begun to merge.

Justin Rattner, CTO and a senior fellow at Intel, told Computerworld that perhaps as early as 2012 we'll see the lines between human and machine intelligence begin to blur. Nanoscale chips or machines will move through our bodies, fixing deteriorating organs or unclogging arteries. Sensors will float around our internal systems monitoring our blood sugar levels and heart rates, and alerting doctors to potential health problems.

Virtual worlds will become increasingly realistic, while robots will develop enough intelligence and human-like characteristics that they'll become companions, not merely vacuum cleaners and toys.

Most aspects of our lives, in fact, will be very different as we close in on the year 2050. Computing will be less about launching applications and more about living lives in which computers are inextricably woven into our daily activities.

"What we think of as a computer and what we think of as IT, in general, is likely to change," said Rattner, who has been at Intel for 35 of the company's 40 years. "The intelligent systems will move from being information systems to intelligent systems that will carry out a whole variety of tasks that we just won't think of as computing tasks.... The technology will find its way into so many things we do, and we won't even think about it. The explicit way we've done computing in the past will be there, but it will be a very small subset of what we'll be doing."

Intel hit its 40th anniversary last Friday. The company launched its first microprocessor in 1971, developed a processor with more than 1 million transistors in 1989, and late in 2007 packed 820 million transistors onto a single chip.

While chip advancements will continue throughout the semiconductor industry, technology advancements in general will start to change, according to Rattner.

"When you think back on where we were [decades ago] ... computers were still things that largely sat in big rooms behind big windows and were attended to by computing gurus or priests," he added. "In the 40 years, we've just completely changed the way people think about computers and computing. It's gone from a very expensive, very exclusive kind of technology to something that is unquestionably ubiquitous -- from the computers on our desks to the computers in our cell phones."

In the next 40 years, computer chips will extend beyond our computers and phones, as people want to become more entrenched in virtual worlds and computers learn to react to our motions and thoughts.

"When you see how intense the reaction is to things like the iPhone, with its use of touch and its sensitivity to motion, you begin to get a sense of, 'Gee, if machines understand the physical world and were capable of reacting to our voices, to our movements and gestures and touch, how much closer would we feel to them?'" asked Rattner. "At the same time, of course, we would like the ability to become more a part of these artificial or virtual worlds that are created entirely within the machine. We're starting to see, with things like Second Life and now Lively from Google, the ability of these machines to create these worlds that are much more comfortable for us to experience and be a part of."

As machine learning and computer perception progresses, machines will take on more and more human-like characteristics, he added. Recently, scientists have been putting electrodes into living neurons in living brains, but some researchers are working on ways to transfer brain waves and organic information without the electrodes, which wouldn't be physically intrusive.

"You can imagine a future where, in fact, not just our very senses will be engaged, but our thoughts will drive machine behavior," said Rattner. "You can see how that boundary starts to soften and begins to blur.... There's no question in my mind that the technology will bring these two unique and distinct forms of intelligence together."

My Computer Crashed And Died Today

My Computer Crashed And Died Today - poem

My computer crashed and died today
And I thought, "oh well what the hey"
Now I'd have time to clean my house
And see if I still had a spouse

It started out with weird frustrations
Combined with mild heart palpitations
And then my ankles began to swell
Withdrawal symptoms from no AOL

Chills ran up and down my spine
Oh, God I had to get on-line
To greet my buds and check my mail
I began to feel helpless and frail

Then I remembered the Good Guy's Store
And all those computers by the door
I'd go there and when alone
With no one looking I'd sign-on

I stepped up to a computer, clicked on AOL
The Sign-On screen came up, man it sure looked swell
I clicked on the Guest name, then came the modem sound
I was having cold-sweats, as my heart began to pound

Then I typed my password, and the computer said, "Goodbye"
And that's what I kept hearing each time that I would try.
This was just an evil plot, the store was playing tricks
If only they had known how bad I need my AOL fix

I ...slowly... typed... my... password... then...I... stood....and...waited
The darned thing said , "Goodbye" again and I got real frustrated
That's when I shoved the keyboard thru the monitor screen
And the last thing I remember is my loud shrieking scream

When I woke I was handcuffed being booked
I think I asked the data entry cop, if he'd get me a drink
Now I'm sitting in his chair, and I know I can get well
If I can just use his computer to sign on AOL.

Is Your Computer Posture Hurting You? If your body starts hurting while you are sitting at your computer, it is time to fix your computer posture. Sitting at your computer all day can cause immediate and continuous, prolonged pain if you are not careful.

More and more people are spending an increasingly longer period of time on their computers. This increases the number of people with forward head posture and upper body aches and pains.

Here are some easy tips to keep your computer from becoming your worst enemy.

1. Exercise is the best medicine for common neck, back, shoulder aches caused from poor posture. When you sit at your computer all day, your muscles become rigid, tight and aches and pains creep in.

Swimming is the best exercise for getting rid of your upper body aches and pains, especially neck pain because it loosens and strengthens your neck and back muscles.

2. Raise your computer monitor so the center is eye level. Raising the monitor a good 5 to 10 inches will help improve your computer posture. Continuously looking down will put the head in an uncompromising posture position which causes and increases aches and pain.

3. Don't spend all day on your computer, if possible. After 15 to 20 minutes on the computer, get up and walk around. This will help exercise your muscles, refresh your mind and help get rid of your upper body tension. You can also do some stretches, especially neck stretches in your chair if you can't get out of your seat.

4. Exercise: This is probably the only truly reliable long term solution to your aches and pains as it increases your muscles strength and loosens the body's tension from staying still.

5. Improve your posture. Don't slouch at your computer. Sit up straight. Don't slouch while standing. Stand up straight. Don't slouch.

6. Stop sticking your head out. When a person has forward head posture, they put an extra 10 to 15 pounds of excess strain on their upper body for every inch forward the head is from its natural plum line, causing pain which could lead to a hump on your back.

7. Stretch your neck. There are many stretching exercises for free on the Internet which will help release neck tension. When you wake up, spend extra time in the hot shower stretching your neck muscles. The heat will help loosen your neck after a long night of sleep. The more you stretch your neck, the better you will feel.
